Commentary In NHLPA '93 and NHL '94, Emmy award-winning sportscaster Ron Barr gives a pre-game scouting report prior to each game. In the Genesis version of NHL 95, KNBR radio sportscaster John Shrader replaced Ron Barr in that duty. NHL series in popular culture Swingers The removal of fights in 'NHL Hockey 94' was addressed in the 1996 movie: Trent: 'I wish they still had fights in this game, so I could bitch slap.' They don't have fighting anymore?' Trent: 'Doesn't that suck?' Mike: 'Why'd they get rid of the fighting? It was the best part of the old version.'
Sue: 'I think kids were hittin' each other or somethin', man.' Trent: 'Yeah, but you know what, Mike? You can make their heads bleed in this one.'
Mike: 'Make somebody's head bleed. ' Sue: 'No man, we're in the playoffs.' Trent: 'I'm gonna make Wayne Gretzky's head bleed for super-fan #99 over here. ' However, this is not completely accurate, as bleeding players were also removed. They also were playing 'NHLPA Hockey '93', which had blood and fighting; but the fighting was strategic and players like Gretzky would rarely, if at all, have fought.
This was due to his low fighter and aggressiveness ratings; while higher profile enforcers such as, and had very high ratings of each, making each more likely to be called for penalties including fighting, others such as Gretzky had low ratings of both, making the latter not only less likely to fight, but also less likely to take any penalties at all. However, in the original 'NHL Hockey', Gretzky was able to fight more often. Mallrats 's 1995 movie featured as Brodie Bruce playing NHL All-Star Hockey for the (in the DVD commentary, Kevin Smith admitted to loving the NHL series but having to use Sega's game for sponsor reasons). The Stanley Cup Final is just around the corner, meaning one team will drink from the best-looking trophy in professional sports. Gamers who want to play along at home, however, will have to buy a Playstation 4 or Xbox One. EA Sports hasn’t released a PC hockey game since the year before the first iPad came out. Pre-Internet, the story would likely end there. Hockey fans would either buy a console or stop playing hockey video games.
But this isn’t a pre-Internet world. So fans took the matter into their own hands. The result is NHL 2004 Rebuilt, a patched version of a game first released in 2003. The graphics are, by today’s standards, woefully outdated, but the mod is surprisingly modern otherwise. There’s the latest rosters, player photos, arena designs, and a complete alternative to the default interface. Sure, it’s a pain to set up.
But this is the best PC hockey game you’ve never heard of. It’s in the game (because fans put it there) In 2011, the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Manitoba and became the Winnipeg Jets. You might assume, then, that you can’t play as the Jets in NHL 2004 Rebuilt. “This is the only game, for me, that still feels like real hockey.” Fire the modded game up, though, and you’ll find the Jets. Their rink, the MTS Center, is re-created with accurate on-ice paint, and even advertisements on the boards. Jim Hughson, the game’s play-by-play man, calls the team the “Winnipeg,” and also knows the names of most players who joined the league after 2004.
Players and coaches’ in-game faces are up-to-date as well. There are so many little tweaks that make this possible. So who made this? Gamers just liked NHL 04 better Trent (not his real name) is a longtime hockey fan who lives in Finland. He’s the coordinator of NHL 2004 Rebuilt, and feels strongly that NHL 04 is the best hockey game EA Sports ever built.
“When NHL 05 came out, I was disgusted,” he told Digital Trends. “The AI is pure crap.” NHL 05 to 09 were all, in Trent’s opinion, easy to the point of being broken. “I was able to win my first NHL 09 game, at the hardest difficultly, 8-0,” he said. “But I still get my arse kicked in NHL 2004. This is the only game, for me, that still feels like real hockey.”. Because of this, Trent and a few like-minded people decided to update NHL 2004, long after most modders abandoned the game in favor of newer titles.
“We had very nice little community going for a year or two,” said Trent. Then, in 2009, EA Sports stopped offering PC versions of its NHL games altogether. The small community grew. Around 200 people have contributed to NHL Rebuilt at one point or another, according to Trent. These days, seven people do the bulk of the ongoing work. The game offers not just updated rosters, but a completely new user interface, dubbed “ESPN.” This offers entirely new features, particularly in season mode.
Players can read computer-generated preview articles for upcoming games and see a play-by-play breakdown for all simulated games in season mode.

Thanks. 1. INTRODUCTION Welcome to the roster update FAQ for ESPN HOCKEY 2k5. This probably won't be the only update FAQ on the market for this year's game because in the past I've failed to update regularly because of class work or other things comming up. I hope those problems have been rectified. This will not be a guide on how to play ESPN HOCKEY 2k5 - isn't that what the in-game manuel is for?
If you don't know how to get to the in-game manuel, select the bottom option on the game's main menu. If you can't find it then, give up.
This guide will be for updating your NHL rosters to (hopefully) accurately match the ones of the real NHL clubs. I am in no way, shape or form affiliated with ESPN, the NHLPA, SEGA, Kush Games, or any other organization responsible for this game. Got a problem with me, take it up with my lawyer Leonord J.
VERSION HISTORY VERSION 0.50 DATE 9-3-04 Game has been released. Most major transactions finished. Still need to do a lot however, as you can all see. 2. CONACT INFORMATION You can email me at ANY time at [email protected] - just don't send me junk mail or viruses and please mention ESPN 2k5 in the subject line. I frequent GAMEFAQS often under the alias of dynamitehack91. I also frequent A.I.M.
Under the handle of dags91. If you need to get a quick message to me and have yahoo messanger, please leave it at dynamitehack91. I'm willing to answer quick questions and maybe even talk hockey if I'm in the mood. The sport is a passion for me but its not my whole life.
3. BASIC Q & A Q1 - Are you sure you want people contacting you on AIM? You've been pissy in the past on it.
A1 - Some people have annoyed, I'll admit that. I'm willing to try it again I know there's enough great hockey fans out there to talk to so it would be a shame to lose that. Q2 - Why are there two John Tripp(s), two Patrick Boileau(s), ect.? A2 - Honestly, I have no clue. Just use player edit.
If you can get over the fact that you're new player will have the same potrait as Tripp (or whomever) then by all means create a new player out of the dupes. Q3 - Why has no one signed Daniel McGillis? A3 - Again, no clue. I didn't expect him to be a top free agent but I'm surprised no one has picked him up. He's not going to cost a lot and he's a fine defenseman for the right side of any blueline. Q4 - What should I do with Retired Players? A4 - Most people like to set their stats all to zero rendering the player useless.
That's up to you. I don't mind if you use retirees in your rosters. Q5 - What about Europe bound players? What do I do with them? Q5 - You could either fit them on National teams or set their stats to 0 as well. Personally, I leave them in the free agent pool but I don't touch them because they are technically not free agents. Q6 - You forgot so-and-so on the Free Agent list.
Q6 - There's a few 'fictional' players sitting on the free agency list when you start up the game. I failed to put them on the list because I'd rather you just use them for creating new players.
However, at the moment, there are going to be some I forgot while glancing over the free agent list - I'll be making corrections in the first week. If they are not there in a week, then they probably don't deserve to be there. Q7 - You use abbrivations that I dont' understand.
What do they mean? = German Elite League S.E.L. = Swedish Elite League S.N.L. = Swiss National League R.S.L. = Russian Super League C.E.L. = Czech Extra League SLVK.N.L = Slovakian National League S.M.L. = Finnish SM-Liiga ECHL = 'East Coast' Hockey League Q8 - What does 'NHL Rights' mean on some of the Free Agents?
A8 - Currently they have a contract with a European club but if they ever decided to come back to the NHL, their NHL rights are owned by the club mentioned. If you want to put those players on the NHL rosters, by all means go ahead, however note that they won't be playing for that NHL squad for the upcoming season (in most cases.). 4. FREE AGENT LIST The default Free Agents list is a bit odd seeing as it is full of some players that were never released (or not qualified) by their respective clubs. You may want to clear out the Free Agent list first in order to give yourself more flexibility in adjusting the actual roster. Some of the players on the free agents list have either retired, signed with European clubs or have been on European clubs for quite some time.
I've mentioned what European club some of these players have signed with. Don't worry if you've never heard of the club - you can do what you like with these players but just know - they are not 'exactly' free agents. Retired players you could always set their player attributes to 0 if you'd like, rendering them useless. You may want to do the same with European players - its your choice. 7. TEAM MOVES A. ANAHEIM MIGHTY DUCKS The Ducks look to make it back to the playoffs in 2005 after a dissapointing 2003-04 season, one year removed from Game 7 of the Finals. After an off-season of payroll cuts, the Ducks are expecting some of their youth to finally step up. All eyes will be on LUPUL and CHISTOV to strengthen the second line.
FEDOROV and SYKORA return as the team's top players and RUCCHIN will retain his second line job. The checking line looks great with NIEDERMAYER, MCDONALD and the underrated PAHLSSON on the third line. BURNETT can be inserted on the fourth line as an enforcer but the Ducks are hoping SMIRNOV can finally grab a line-up spot. On defense the team carries three 80+ dmen in OZOLINSH, CARNEY and SALEI. VISHNEVSKI and SKOULA should already have slots but the last spot is a battle between MALEC, FOSTER, POPOVIC and WARD. In net GIGUERE firmly holds the starting job but BRYZGALOV could push him soon. ATLANTA THRASHERS The Thrashers feel its time this club makes a serious push for the playoffs. They do field some excellent offensive forwards in HEATLEY, KOVALCHUK, KOZLOV and SAVARD. MCEACHERN may be slightly overrated in the game but use that to your advantage. MELLANBY and STEFAN should help round out the top six.
AUBIN and PETROVICKY will handle the checking. SIMON and SANTALA should battle for the fourth line center job. LESSARD and BRENNAN give the Thrashers some goon muscle if needed or you could throw in STEWART, VIGIER or LARSEN. Defense leaves something to be desired in Atlanta.
I find TJARNQVIST slightly overrated and MAJESKY underrated. EXELBY hits everything that moves as does KLOUCEK. In net the team boasts a nice Finnish trio. NURMINEN will hold the job to start but don't be surprised to see LEHTONEN wrestle the job away from him fairly soon and find himself better than an 81. HURME has not played in almost a year because of a groin injury but should be healthy in 2k5. BOSTON BRUINS GM Mike O'Connell certainly cleaned house over the off-season and has yet to make any real significant additions leaving Boston as one of the problem teams in the game.
In releasing all the players not on the Bruin roster, you'll be left with one goalie and 5 defensemen. Best way around that is to create HANNU TOIVENEN in goal and MILAN JURICA, BRIAN WHITE or KEVIN DALLMAN on defense. Bruins do start with a very solid young netminder in RAYCROFT and two top line players in THORNTON and SAMSONOV. BERGERON, BOYES and HILBERT will be expected to play huge roles on this decemated Bruins squad. LAPOINTE and AXELSSON should make for a solid third line centered by VERNARSKY. ORR may find himself into the line up as the Bruins main enforcer and FITZGERALD and STOCK may join him on the fourth line.
The defense contains two all-star D-men in BOYNTON and GONCHAR. GILL will add size and GIRARD will work the second PP-unit despite missing over a year due to injury. MORAN rounds out the Bruins defense.

BUFFALO SABRES The Sabres have a pretty nice team going with SATAN being their main goal scorer. BRIERE has established himself as a top center and may even be underrated here.
DRURY adds a one-two punch up the middle and DUMONT and AFINOGENOV could score goals in bunches - however their defense is lax. HECHT can play any forward position so use that wisely. KOTALIK has the potential for a big year, you may want to raise his stats if he gets off to a hot start.
PYATT, GRIER, CONNOLLY and ROY give the Sabres options on the third line. MAIR and GAUSTAD should anchor the fourth line with PETERS as the main enforcer. With the departure of ZHITNIK, KALININ takes over as the club's top d-man and feature 8 dmen in the 70s and a perfect balance of right-handed and left-handed dmen. In net the Sabres have three 80 rank goalies, though it may be unfair to put MILLER in that range just yet.
BIRON has a firm hand on the starting job but NORONEN is capable of taking the job away. You may think about moving one in your franchise mode.

CALGARY FLAMES This team goes as far as IGINLA takes them though they upgraded by switching essentially Conroy for LANGKOW. REINPRECHT should be healthy now (and may deserve a stat boost).
The strength of the Flames is their abundance of hard-working checkers - YELLE, NILSON, WEIMER and others simply will never be outworked - too bad that doesn't translate very well into a video game. More will be expected out of LOMBARDI and KOBASEW. Defense is a strong point with five 80s D-Men led by REGEHR and LEOPOLD. KIPRUSOFF and TUREK give you a nice combination in net as well. CAROLINA HURRICANES The past few seasons have not been kind to the Canes since going to the Finals. But they've set themselves up nicely with budding star STAAL leading the charge with VASICEK and 30 goaler O'NEILL on his flanks. BRIND'AMOUR, BAYDA and COLE will bring back the BBC line and CULLEN will see his share of wingers in BRENDL, VRBATA and WILLIAMS. BOULERICE has had injury problems but will most likely be Carolina's top enforcer. Defense looks pretty solid. HEDICAN and WESLEY may be getting old but they might be better than 80 and 79, respectively.
KABERLE and FAST will help on the PP-units while ST JACQUES, WALLIN and WARD handle the rough stuff. In net you may have to create ROB ZEPP to complete the roster accurately as the game only has one goalie for Carolina in GERBER. I still can't see why people side with the owners when you've got people like Writz running franchises. There's a lot of good youth on this club in ARNASON, YAKUBOV, BELL, RADULOV, VOROBIEV, ELLISON and especially RUUTU.
DAZE takes billing as the best forward on the Hawks in 2k5 but you could make an arguement for CALDER. BROWN and NICHOL give them two nice defensive centers but YAKUBOV will have to step into the second line role immediately. BARNABY is always fiesty and BELL is looking for a break-out season. They may be slightly generous on the Hawks defense but BERARD and MCCARTHY are the best here although CULLIMORE is ranked higher than MCCARTHY. Rookie BABCHUK should make a fine addition to the blueline. THIBAULT has a hold on the starting job in net but LEIGHTON has gotten attention as a potential starter down the road. MUNRO and ANDERSON will spend time as #3 and #4 on the depth chart.

Can't wait to take Jonathan Toews and the Hawks back on another cup run. Plus, GM Mode lets me fix most of the dumb-ass decisions Stan Bowman has been making since he took over. I love this franchise and how much the people at EA Vancouver clearly love hockey. EDIT: Couldn't care less about the legends though. I understand the appeal, but I feel like the NHL is currently home to the best crop of young, amazing stars in a looooong time. The legends had their time, now it's the time for Crosby, Ovechkin, the Stahl brothers, Toews, Kane, Keith, Stamkos and all the other young studs to battle it out.
